Managing Tax Rates
What this feature does
Managing Tax Rates allows you to view and configure the specific tax percentages that apply to your business based on your country. For businesses in Ghana, this includes standard taxes like VAT (Value Added Tax), NHIL (National Health Insurance Levy), GET Fund (Ghana Education Trust Fund), and Covid Levy. You can enable or disable individual tax components to ensure your checkout calculations match your legal tax obligations.
Who it is for
This feature is designed for business owners and managers who need to ensure their pricing complies with local tax regulations. Whether you are launching a new venue, responding to changes in tax law, or working with your accountant to verify correct tax collection, this is where you manage which taxes apply to your sales and at what rates.
When to use it
Review your tax rates when you first enable tax calculations for your venue. You should also check these settings whenever your country introduces new taxes, changes existing tax rates, or if your business qualifies for tax exemptions on certain levies. Additionally, if you operate in multiple countries, the system automatically presents the relevant tax rates for each venue based on its location.
Key concepts
Default Tax Rates: These are the official tax rates for your country, pre-configured in the system based on your venue's location. For Ghana, this includes VAT at 15%, NHIL at 2.5%, GET Fund at 2.5%, and Covid Levy at 1%. These rates are maintained by the platform to reflect current legal requirements.
Enabling and Disabling Tax Components: You can activate or deactivate individual taxes based on your business circumstances. Enabling a tax means it will be calculated and added to customer purchases; disabling it means that particular tax will not be collected.
Country-Specific Rates: The taxes you see depend on which country you selected when creating your venue. The system automatically displays the relevant taxes for that jurisdiction.
Universal Application: When you enable or disable tax rates, these settings apply across all your venues in the same country.
Rate Updates: Tax rates are maintained by the platform team based on official government sources. If tax rates change, contact support to request an update.
Common questions
Can I change the percentage rates for these taxes?
No, the percentage rates reflect official government tax rates and cannot be modified by individual businesses. This protects you from accidentally applying incorrect rates and helps ensure compliance. If you believe a rate is incorrect, contact support with documentation from your tax authority, and we will review and update it if needed.
What if my business is exempt from certain taxes?
If your business qualifies for exemption from specific taxes (for example, some small businesses may be exempt from certain levies), you can disable those particular tax components while keeping others active. However, make sure you have proper documentation of your exemption status, as you remain legally responsible for collecting the correct taxes.
Do I need to enable all the taxes shown?
That depends on your business registration and legal obligations. Most standard businesses need to collect all applicable taxes for their country. However, your specific circumstances (business size, industry, or special exemptions) might affect which taxes apply to you. Consult with your accountant or tax advisor to determine which taxes you are required to collect.
What happens if tax rates change in my country?
When tax rates change due to new laws or government policy, the Servinn team updates the system to reflect the new official rates. You will be notified of these updates, and the new rates will automatically apply to future transactions. Past transactions remain calculated with the rates that were applicable at the time of sale.
Why can't I see options for custom tax rates?
Currently, the system focuses on standard government-mandated taxes to ensure compliance and simplicity. Custom rates for industry-specific taxes or special circumstances may be added in future updates. If you have unique tax requirements not covered by the standard rates, contact support to discuss your situation.
