Understanding Service Fees
What this feature does
Service fees are how Servinn generates revenue to keep the platform running and improving. Rather than charging you a monthly subscription, the platform adds a small percentage fee to each customer transaction based on your business tier. This fee is automatically calculated and added to the final amount your customers pay, meaning it does not reduce your product prices or cut into your profit margins.
Who it is for
Every business owner using Servinn should understand how service fees work, as they affect the final prices your customers see at checkout. This knowledge helps you communicate pricing to customers, understand your total revenue calculations, and appreciate how your business growth can lead to lower service fee rates through the tiered system.
When to use it
You do not actively "use" service fees, they happen automatically. However, understanding them is important when you are setting product prices (so you can consider the total amount customers will pay), explaining charges to customers who ask, and planning your business growth strategy (since higher transaction volumes lead to lower fee percentages through tier advancement).
Key concepts
Tiered Fee Structure: Servinn uses a five-tier system where your service fee percentage decreases as your business grows. Higher transaction volumes move you to better tiers with lower fees, rewarding your success and making the platform more affordable as you scale.
Tier Thresholds: Each tier is based on cumulative transaction volume or order count. Starting businesses pay a higher percentage while they are building up, while established businesses with significant volume enjoy lower rates. This makes the platform accessible for newcomers while becoming increasingly cost-effective for growing businesses.
Customer-Borne Fees: The service fee is added to the amount customers pay, not deducted from your earnings. If you price a product at 100 currency units and the service fee is 1.5%, the customer pays 101.50 units. You receive the full 100 units you set as your price (minus payment processing fees, which are separate).
Automatic Tier Progression: You do not need to apply or request tier changes. The system automatically tracks your business volume and adjusts your tier accordingly. As you cross threshold amounts, your service fee rate decreases automatically for future transactions.
Transparency: The service fee is displayed to customers during checkout as a separate line item, making it clear that this is a platform service charge rather than part of your product pricing. This transparency helps customers understand exactly what they are paying for.
Common questions
Why does Servinn charge service fees instead of a monthly subscription?
The service fee model means you only pay when you are making money through the platform. New businesses or those with seasonal fluctuations do not face fixed monthly costs during slow periods. As your business succeeds, you pay proportionally, but the rate decreases as you grow, making it fairer and more aligned with your actual usage and success.
Can I see my current service fee rate?
Yes, you can view your current business tier and associated service fee percentage in the Settings area under Business Tier and Service Rates. This shows exactly what percentage is being added to customer transactions, and you can track your progress toward the next tier with lower rates.
Do service fees come out of my product prices?
No, service fees are added on top of the prices you set for your products. If you list an item at 50 currency units, you will receive 50 units (minus payment processing fees). The customer pays an additional amount based on the service fee percentage, which goes to Servinn for providing the platform.
How are service fees different from payment processing fees?
Service fees pay for the Servinn platform (the dashboard, order management, customer-facing pages, etc.), while payment processing fees go to payment providers (like mobile money networks or card processors) for handling the actual money transfer. Both are necessary for the system to work, but they serve different purposes and go to different parties.
Can I negotiate my service fee rate?
The service fee structure is based on your business tier, which is determined by your transaction volume. While you cannot negotiate custom rates, you can lower your rate by growing your business and moving to higher tiers. If you have exceptional circumstances or very high volume, you can contact support to discuss your situation, but the standard tiered system applies to all businesses for fairness and transparency.
